It felt soooo good to be back in the studio this w

It felt soooo good to be back in the studio this week - 2 full days without expectation.... I started some small canvases using collage to tighten the surface, I worked on a set of 12” panels thinking mainly about ways to create torn texture. I’ve always loved torn billboard posters and want to get more graphic elements back into my work...

Today I felt bold enough to keep pushing some of the larger ones. This colour palette of baby blue, yellow and pink is somewhat surprising, currently a bit sickly BUT there are also some wonderfully nuanced neutrals coming through where layers combine.

As I look back through recent sketchbooks I see a theme of simplicity with extremes of scale and focus on small areas. It’s perhaps hard to see here but it feels both an intellectual and physical challenge at this stage. That was my week - time for a Thai takeaway 🙂

Ooo! That felt good - despite the sodding news 😁 I have new trestle tables all ready for a potential workshop 🙄🤪 so I set up a new working area (swipe for the mess).

Also I have 7 large new canvases so I was testing smaller ones first using soft gel to bond paper to create a smoother surface. You can see in the video - use water to stretch the paper a bit first means no wrinkles. On the canvas at least 😂

Jeez, I need to get out of the house more!! Gorgeous sunny day here in London so the garden is calling for the last hour of sunshine.

Big or small? On the Art Juice podcast today (episode 88) we were talking about whether it’s necessary to scale up and work BIG... there are some thrills and challenges, but I still really enjoy these smaller pieces which have an intimacy and often delicacy.

‘Clear as Glass’ SOLD today, there are just a few at this size on my website to choose from, framed. Makes it more likely to get it on your wall quicker!

Thank you to everyone who wrote to me after yesterday’s stories. I’m alright really 🙂 And the dog is back to being normal too. This week is all going to be about re-calibrating and refocusing and making sure I have time for good things too.

So this means exercise every day. More time for reading. Time for family.

My son goes off to Uni on Friday, today I sorted out my daughters broken phone. (Mine which broke 2 weeks out of warranty just as we started lockdown is still on the to-do list!)

We had a fabulous family meal with my parents yesterday and my daughter made these macrons which are heaven in a dish...

So, tell me some good things you will be enjoying. Xxx

Quite amused that “Finding Fun” is on display

Quite amused that “Finding Fun” is on display in front of a stencilled smiley! 😀
This was part of a group completed during lockdown... some more expansive landscapes others like this more abstract and when it came to naming I wanted a way to recognise some of the emotions. So we have Finding Space, Finding Brave, Calm and this is Finding Fun (£640) and Finding Fierce (£540)

We’ve been given the all clear to open this weekend with number restrictions in place so find out more on the @cowshedcollective account. The venue is no.8 on the Rural trail for @artwavefestival and open this weekend 11-5:30pm.

I don’t use red very often but this deep orange/coral I just love to mix and it’s a fab splash of colour in neutral spaces.
