Often a painting has many lives before it finally settles. I first started this one three years ago. Overly bright initial layers; different, flamboyant, expressive. That first round could have been ‘it’ but it felt too easy. This painting has been worked on and set aside at various times… but I was never quite satisfied it was complete.
For the last year or so, it’s been mainly pale blue, with some quite structured thin veils of colour. Perhaps this was finished; it was rather beautiful, but felt a little lifeless. Recently, I turned it and started writing over it; some deliberate destruction. And from that it breathed back to life. Coming full circle back to those expressive marks – but this time with more history and subtlety. “Tell Me a Story”…. and it does.
