Photo from the new studio, where the light is rather yellow! I think buying those filter photographers lights has been one of the most useful things I’ve ever bought - do you have them? They are great for photographing work - either on their own with a full DSLR shebang, or just adding to natural light in situation shots.

Yes, you feel like a plonker setting them up, but it’s nice to say hello, so here we are!

Today I’m buying new walking shoes and getting a hair cut. Tomorrow my son turns 18 but he’s out at a party for the weekend so we won’t even see him, although I think we may celebrating for getting this far!

What are your weekend plans? I may head back to the Affordable Art Fair Which is on in Battersea Park. I already bought one painting there on Wednesday, so that could be dangerous!

Morning walk... Urban patterns, colour clashes, compositions, shadows, graphics, evidence of life, light, nature and human interaction.

The sun is shining, which helps, but I love where I live. I love outdoor open country too, but the messy, busy city living I find such a buzz - even the grotty stuff!

What do you take for granted where you live that really zings you up?!

This isn’t huge, I think it’s 80cm tall, but it still takes a fairly hefty amount of paint to create those marks. I have that sense now of not wanting to mess with this... it’s either a stand-alone, or another possible painting pair. Definitely feeling a difference in working, and currently doing far too much sitting and looking before making a move!

I’ve always been a good sleeper. (Hold on to see how this relates to art!) Once I slept right through until 5pm, got up for supper and slept fine at 10pm the same night (that was after the first term at university - guess I had been “working” hard!) Recently, not so much. Lots on my mind, hormones maybe, but you know what I really miss? Dreaming!! That long semi-conscious slumber is one of life’s delights for me.

Today I was woken at 5am, I gave up trying to sleep, made a cup of tea and read for a while until I felt snoozy. When I woke up I realised why I love this state so much and why it feels really important.... The last few days, and weeks have been busy. I remember snippets of conversation and scramble to remember who it was who talked about living in Japan, recently I slept in 3 different places in a week... but when you dream your brain just takes over and kind of sorts it out into a totally new story.

If I keep my eyes closed when I wake, I can identify all the elements and enjoy ‘placing’ them, but the way it’s re-configured is always a slightly weird and new version - which I think is exactly how I like to paint. Take the parts, just suck them all in, mix it up and see what new version emerges. If I’m really on it, I can even go to bathroom, come back to sleep, pick up where I left off or even change the course of dreams. Is this lucid dreaming?
I wonder what part of our subconscious ‘gets out’ when we paint?

Yeah!! Unloaded all the work in progress paintings to the new studio... will post the full mess in stories.

So the issue is how do these relate? Never before have I had the space to spread everything out at the same time - usually it’s only when I’m hanging at a show I get to do this, so this was really helpful. The one in the foreground is a really old canvas which I paired with a new one which makes working over them both a little easier - it’s now 1.7m and I’m enjoying working on canvas again.

Every week for almost 4 years now I’ve done a weekly written check-in as part of a coaching group I’m in. Some weeks are good, others not so much but we are all there to celebrate, help, cheer on, commiserate together. I love my family but they are fairly pants at understanding what I do. I don’t know where I would be without this kind of network. I hope you’ve found yours... how has Monday been?! .
