Just made a frame for this one - LOVE how slim and

Just made a frame for this one - LOVE how slim and simple it looks. Just finishes it off… this is a bit of a one-off painting. It’s on a deep canvas and worked on over a long time, never quite getting there, until suddenly it was!

But I wanted to present it like this - a little raw, very honest.

I may get my act together and have a small studio sale for pieces like this, but honestly would rather not spend ages on the computer …

Shall I do it here instead? Are we seeing posts again?!

Today we practiced pushing things further, as Edison said “Nearly every man who develops an idea works it up to the point where it looks impossible, and then gets discouraged. “
That’s not the place to get discouraged-that’s the place to start looking for connections.

And then give yourself the time space to allow those ideas and explorations to incubate…

How do you feel about sketchbooks? We had an hour and half today and I feel like I just touched the surface!!

(Swipe for the magic…) IG used to feel calming, collaborative and inspirational. Now it feels more like a jarring onslaught…

Yesterday I had a 5hr conversation with an artist friend I met online, through Instagram. We live on different continents so this was the first time we’ve met in person - and it was restorative, fun, inquisitive, open…. All the things I used to love about Instagram. But we also talked about how we’re scrolling - looking for what we used to love here - and no longer finding it.

Not sure what the solution is (yet) but I know it’s not TikTok!! Not for me anyway…

I’m thinking more and more about whether blog “events” or website discussion pages could replace this… but people would have to remember to check - or subscribe for emails… are we just “over” social media?

… I’m not sure… after all we are social beings and we crave and benefit from interaction with fellow creatives. It happens within the membership of course, but I’m wondering if there is another, more open way.

How is drawing part of your art practice? Is it something you wish you did more of? Or maybe you feel you're somehow failing as an artist if you don't go everywhere with a sketchbook tucked under your arm!

This week on episode 172 of the Art Juice podcast we turn our attention to the ancient art of drawing and in particular to the question of what makes a good drawing.

We look at what is meant by the word ‘drawing;’ and the different purposes it can fulfil - are you drawing to explore or gather information, for personal enjoyment or to create an artwork in its own right.

Drawing can be a way of searching for clarity, a way to filter our ideas and we discuss the balance between accuracy (eg with perspective and proportion) and the inherent personality a drawing can imbue.
